Sometimes it is the little things that make all the difference. In the world of large format graphics there is a lot of buzz about new and innovative materials, display fixtures and accents for them. Anyone who knows me knows I totally love this stuff. At the same time, I always try to place myself in the eyes of the user too. Maybe it is because I help clients with their print needs for a living that I am always intrigued with what works and what does not.
When I go out to eat or pass by a business, you know what is one of the first things I notice…. Yep, if there is a banner hanging by the entrance, a poster on the door, wall or window as I’m walking in… I’m reading it. It strikes me that it must be something I should know if the owner took the time to put it there right as I’m getting ready to enter or make a purchase. I’m not sure why but when you see a banner hanging somewhere, it is hard to not want to read what it says. It is not glitzy, sexy or high tech…it just works in communicating your message. It is also funny that printing a banner can be one of the cheapest solutions for pumping up a business, message or having fun. Here is another interesting article showing how the professional association for design, AIGA, used banners to enhance their event.
I walked into the entrance way of Oakville High School last night to watch my enterprising son and his friends in their Spring play and noticed they had about 50 banners hanging in full view for everyone to see. Each banner had a picture of a student in their basketball, football, baseball, cheer leading uniform, etc. with their name and short message about them. How cool is that. Can you imagine the excitement the students must feel for the recognition and attention bestowed upon them. I’m not sure who printed those banners but what a great way to build pride in their accomplishments.
I actually have a client, Stacy Lanier, who is building a budding business doing this exact thing. She is taking high school sports pictures and featuring them on banners for their school and organizations. I always thought it was nice but now I see it as even more than that. Yep, another banner opened my eyes.
